Utah's Three Keys to Beating Baylor - Athlon Sports

Though it’s not technically a conference game, the Utah Utes and the Baylor Bears will play one other for the second consecutive season as Big 12 rivals. Although there might be some well-known players on both teams, the fan bases of each team will need to become acquainted with the completely redesigned rosters they will be fielding for the 2024 season. That being said, Utah supporters should be aware of these three Baylor Bears.

Dequan Finn

Dequan Finn left the Rockets after five years, transferring to Baylor after leading Toledo to the 2023 MAC Championship. Finn ran for over 1,800 yards and 25 rushing scores over that span in addition to recording over 7,000 passing yards, 63 passing touchdowns, and 23 interceptions. The 6’2″ and 206-pound native of Detroit is electrifying, radiating Robert Griffin III-like athleticism. In spite of a few mishaps in the air against Tarleton State, Finn demonstrated his ability to cause havoc for opposing teams. Given Utah’s previous failures to contain the quarterback of SUU last week, defensive coordinator Morgan Scalley will need to ensure that Finn’s running options are restricted if his team hopes to finish the third week unbeaten.

Ketron Jackson Jr.

Ketron Jackson Jr. transferred to Baylor for the 2023 season after playing his first two seasons with the Arkansas Razorbacks, where he recorded over 400 receiving yards and four touchdowns. Jackson Jr., who is in his second season with the Bears, wants to be the star of their athletic receiving group after finishing the previous campaign with over 500 receiving yards and a touchdown on 28 receptions. The 6’3″ 205-pound senior from Royse City, Texas, is already off to a fast start. Against Tarleton State, he hauled in two receptions for 69 yards and a touchdown. Now, he’ll try to build on that momentum against a Utah defense that features comparatively small defensive backs.

Keaton Thomas

In the Bears’ opening game as a sophomore, linebacker Keaton Thomas made his college debut against Tarleton State and immediately made an impression. Thomas was all over the field, recording seven tackles in all, five of which were solo takedowns. He also caught an interception and ran it for a touchdown. The 6’2″ 224-pound native of Jacksonville, Florida is developing into a standout for Baylor. Although Utah has a far more formidable offensive lineup than he will face, the middleman is someone to watch as he is hungry to build on his strong start.
