Rafael Nadal gets another crazy record

The satisfaction that comes from defeating age, unfavorable circumstances, and persistent injuries: Tennis fans have witnessed Rafael Nadal’s remarkable comeback, showcasing a determination that is typically reserved for legendary players, those who are born once every two or three generations. A tournament less prestigious than the French Open, but one that holds immense significance for the moment and context in which it is played, is where the Spanish champion ended up 777 days after the last final at Roland Garros 2022.

The 22-time Slam champion gave himself a chance to reach his 131st ATP final by defeating Croatian Duje Ajdukovic in a close-fought Bastad semifinal. Sum crazy, given that Rafa has won ninety-two of these championship matches.

The one that was won on July 4, 2005, was the Bastad tournament. Few people can claim such stats. In just the ATP finals, he has been surpassed by just four tennis players: Jimmy Connors (164), Roger Federer (157), Ivan Lendl (146), and Novak Djokovic (139). Not only is Rafa the first player to make it to a tournament final after winning it 20 years earlier, but he is also the fifth-oldest tennis player to do so since 1990. The 38-year-old Majorcan faced several challenges on his route to the championship.

After two fairly easy first rounds against Cameron Norrie and Leo Borg, Rafa made a tremendous effort to defeat seasoned calypse Mariano Navone. Additionally difficult was the semifinal matchup with the youthful Ajdukovic.

It’s a great feeling to win four matches in a row and make it to the final, Rafael Nadal said at the end of the match, expressing his pride for a result that had not occurred in two years. It has been far too long since that incident. Seeing myself here, a year after the hip surgery, is very meaningful to me and feels very special. The Iberian champion, who declined to play with Casper Ruud in the doubles semifinal in Bastad, stated, “I hope I can play better tomorrow.” Following a physically taxing week, the former ATP number one opted for caution.
