Kylian Mbappe takes responsibility for PSG’s Champions League exit

After Paris Saint-Germain were ousted from the Champions League by Borussia Dortmund, Kylian Mbappe claimed he wasn’t “decisive” enough in front of goal.

In the semi-finals of the Champions League, PSG was humiliated once more by Dortmund, who prevailed 2-0 on aggregate. Niclas Fullkrug’s goal in the first leg and Mats Hummels’ effort in the second helped the Germans advance to the final. The French team had 30 shots to the visitors’ seven in Tuesday’s 1-0 second-leg loss at Parc des Princes. They also had 70% of the possession and six shots on goal. World Cup winner Kylian Mbappe accepted some of the blame for his team’s elimination after the game.

“I tried to help my team as best I could, but I didn’t do enough,” the Frenchman stated. I feel like I’m the one being attacked when we talk about being efficient in the boxes. I’m the one who needs to be decisive and score goals. I always take center stage when things are going well, and you have to take the back seat when they aren’t. That poses no issue. I was the first person who was supposed to score tonight. That’s life, and my team and I must move on.”

“I don’t know if they were better than us,” he continued. We have no reason to disparage them. They were better in the two boxes, in my humble view. They arrived in ours once or twice and scored. We visited them frequently, but we were never able to score. It is true. I dislike discussing my lack of luck. It goes in when you are good, not just hits the post. We, the attackers, were not good enough today.”

Mbappe set to join Real Madrid

After his contract with the Ligue 1 giants expires, Mbappe appears to be heading to Real Madrid this summer. His six-year tenure there will come to an end. The 25-year-old will depart the club without taking home the Champions League trophy, despite won almost a dozen domestic trophies during that period. For PSG, this might be the end of an era.

On Sunday, Mbappe’s team—who are already champions—will play Toulouse in their return to Ligue 1 action. They play Lyon in the French Cup final on May 25 as Mbappe wants to go out on a high note after facing Nice and Metz later this month.
