“I hope to return to Ireland with a medal,” said Shane Lowry

Following the formal selection of the Irish golf team to play in Paris this summer by the Olympic Federation of Ireland, Shane Lowry will be competing for Ireland in the Olympics for the second time. Replicating the squad that participated in Tokyo, the Offaly man is joined on the Ireland team by his close buddy Rory McIlroy (Down), Leona Maguire (Cavan), and Stephanie Meadow (Antrim). McIlroy, who finished fourth at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, came agonizingly close to taking home a bronze medal, and Lowry is also hoping to be on the podium in Paris.

Lowry is eager to participate in another Olympic Games after making his debut in Tokyo. “I had an incredible first time in Tokyo, and it left me hungry to do it all over again and come back and try my hardest this time,” said the native of Clara. “I’ve talked about and done a lot of things this year that have been related to the Paris Olympics. My main objective is to return to Ireland with a medal, as I have always stated. Going back there with Rory is fantastic as well,” Lowry said.

Going into their third Olympics, Leona Maguire and Stephanie Meadow are comparable. “Being selected for my third Olympics is a huge honor,” stated Maguire. Few individuals possess the distinction of having attended three Olympic Games. It is an enormous honor to represent your nation at any event, but representing it in the Olympics is an even greater privilege. As golfers, we don’t frequently have the opportunity to travel with a team, so being a part of one that is going to Paris is quite remarkable.

We’ve been together for three Olympics now, and it feels like we’ve known each other forever. Now that nearly 20 years have passed, it’s been quite the adventure. Being able to share this with each other and observe each other’s progress in our games and life is pleasant, she continued. “Our golf team is extremely exciting, with each player capable of doing something big out there in Paris,” stated Gavin Noble, Chef de Mission for the Olympic Federation of Ireland for Paris 2024. We had such great joy watching this squad in Tokyo, and we can’t wait to collaborate with Neil Manchip, Golf Ireland’s High Performance Director, and the group to help them.

In Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, close to Versailles and southwest of Paris, at Le Golf National, there will be a golf competition. Le Golf National, owned by the French Golf Federation, is regarded as one of the world’s most picturesque golf courses. The most demanding and intricate of its two 18-hole courses, “L’Albatros,” has played host to several important international tournaments, most notably the Ryder Cup in 2018.

The official count of athletes who have been chosen to represent Team Ireland in Paris 2024 now stands at 126 with the announcement of the golf team. The Opening Ceremony will take place on July 26 and the Olympic Games in Paris will continue from July 24 to August 11.The official count of athletes who have been chosen to represent Team Ireland in Paris 2024 now stands at 126 with the announcement of the golf team.
