At the PGA John Deere Classic, Davis Thompson takes the lead with a scorching 62

Washington: At the PGA Tour John Deere Classic, Davis Thompson shot a bogey-free nine-under 62 on July 6 to take a two-stroke lead following the third round. At TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Illinois, Thompson finished 54 holes on 21-under 192, matching his career low PGA Tour round. He had birdied five of the first eight holes and four of the last seven. “I feel like I’m making the kind of shots I want to make off the tee, which is just helping me hit a lot of greens and get nice looks and freeing up my iron game. We’re hoping to maintain the momentum they’ve had this week, Thompson added.

Aaron Rai of England and Eric Cole of the United States tied for second place with scores of 66 and 64, respectively. Chinese Taipei’s Pan Cheng-tsung, the bronze medallist in the Tokyo Olympics, and American Hayden Springer, who shot 59 on July 4, tied for fourth place on 196 with amateur Luke Clanton, 20, and J.J. Spaun and Michael Thorbjornsen. Thompson stated, “The guys behind me are playing really well.” “I know it’s going to be difficult, but I’ve won golf tournaments before. I just need to keep my focus on the here and now and try to hit good shots.”

The American, who is 25 years old, came second twice on the PGA Tour in his second season in 2024. He did it in May in Myrtle Beach and in June at the Rocket Mortgage Classic. “Resisting the urge to daydream is difficult. But all I have to do is keep moving forward and perform well tomorrow,” he stated. Every week, a lot of losers show up here, he continued. “You are able to finish in the top 10 even after having excellent weeks. You want to win the golf event at the end of the day.

When he played in Detroit last time, Rai, who is vying for his first PGA win, had a share of the lead after 54 holes but was unable to finish strong. Despite winning PGA Tour Rookie of the Year the previous season, Cole, 36, has not yet claimed a tour victory. global No. 70 A 15-foot birdie putt at the eighth hole gave Thompson the lead on 17-under, as he stormed into the lead with birdies on five of the opening eight holes. At the fifth and sixth holes, Thompson added two more birdies after making two in the opening round. He made a putt for birdie at the first, from just outside 24 feet, then holed a bunker shot at the fifth, from 34 feet.

After fellow countryman Nick Dunlap, Clanton aimed to be the second amateur to win a PGA championship in 2024. Regarding being on the hunt, Clanton remarked, “It’s difficult to even consider it.” It seems a little strange. Tomorrow, if you play well, perhaps something interesting will happen.

The 2013 and 2015 winner of the event, Jordan Spieth (63), tied for 12th place on July 6 with the second-best score of 14 under. It was simply a fantastic, strong round, he stated. Absent any noteworthy or ludicrous contributions. Yet, Spieth had a run of generally difficult games, so the round was encouraging. “To stand a chance, I would need to perform exceptionally well and maintain my level of consistency from July 6th, maybe catching a few more breaks,” he stated.
