Andy Cowell, a former Mercedes F1 engine manager, becomes group CEO of Aston Martin

Andy Cowell, a former head of Mercedes Formula One engines, is now the global chief executive of Aston Martin. During a time of immense success at Mercedes, Cowell held the positions of managing director and engineering director, contributing to the team’s victories in both the drivers’ and constructors’ titles from 2014 to 2020. After leaving in 2020, Cowell has since joined an Aston Martin team that has had recent setbacks but is still adamant about competing for global championships.

Executive Chairman Lawrence Stroll will be Cowell’s supervisor from the day he starts his position on October 1. Aston Martin announced that group chief executive Martin Whitmarsh will relinquish his position at the end of the current year. Stroll remarked, “I am thrilled to have Andy join our team at this critical juncture.”

We are headed toward becoming a world championship-winning team thanks to our collaboration with Honda, the dedication of our title partner Aramco, and Andy’s leadership. I fully support Andy, and I’ll do all in my power to help him win. “I am thrilled to join Lawrence’s exciting project and look forward to working with the talented group that has been assembled,” Cowell continued.

My competitive love has always been Formula One, and I am joining Aston Martin Aramco at a very exciting time, as we prepare to turn into a full works team in 2026 with our strategic partners Honda and Aramco, and as the AMR Technology Campus nears completion. According to BlackBook, For Aston Martin, this is a huge coup. Stroll’s aspirations for a championship have not been realized thus far, as the squad has taken to falling behind the pack as the season progresses.

The groundwork is in place for the Silverstone-based company to advance after investing in a US$276 million facility. To ensure constant and positive development, the next step is to make sure the right people are working behind the scenes. It is important for Stroll to make sure the team is in top form to take full advantage of the possibility because Aston Martin will become the Honda works team starting

in 2026.
